Abstract
This paper introduces the concepts of a service management system for mobile agent-based services.
In contrast to several other approaches in which agent-based applications are used to handle "traditional"
network or service management aspects, this paper describes a way to manage the distributed agent environment
itself. The proposed approach was designed and developed by using OSI Systems Management concepts as a starting
point, which are modified and adjusted in order to fulfil the new requirements associated with the mobile agent
paradigm. However, this paper does not cover an integration or co-existence of the introduced agent management
system (AMS) and traditional OSI management systems. Instead, the entire AMS environment is based on mobile agent
technology. At present, this approach is validated in the context of the European research project
Mobile Agent Environments in Intelligent Networks (MARINE).
